“I’ve been talking to Margaret about the menu. I wasn’t sure what you prefer to eat for supper?” Romina felt like the silence was worse than speaking ever could be, so she let herself say something that would at least break the multi-day silence they’d been living in. “I’m having her send away for three of the latest cookbooks, so perhaps we can expand our dinner options as time goes on.”

He nodded but didn’t say anything to this, as if her question about what he’d like to eat was rhetorical, not meant to be answered. They sat in silence eating their first course. Romina drank a few sips of her wine, then stared into her plate once again. Perhaps tonight wasn’t a change of anything after all, she thought. Raymond seemed in no hurry to make conversation or try to alleviate the silence that Romina was having such a difficult time with.
